The field of Information Security is the study of countermeasures to the threat of information infrastructure failure to ensure the security of electronic information. It embraces a range of technologies such as cryptography, computer security, and fraud detection, and also includes the study of how security can best be managed. There are a number of online degree in information security courses are offered.

Royal Holloway, University of London  offers both MSc and Post Graduate diploma online in the field of information security. This programme introduces the technical, legal and commercial aspects of Information Security. The programs last for a period of 2-5 and 1-5 years respectively.

James Madison University–Masters Degree in Computer Science Concentration in Information Security (InfoSec)

The Graduate InfoSec program at James Madison University is designed for working professionals. The program is delivered to students through the Internet without the frustration of commute and traffic to and from on-campus classrooms. JMU InfoSec provides professional development and research opportunities for those currently employed or interested in information security or infrastructure protection positions in both the government and private industry. The program is attuned to the rapid advances in our information society and incorporates new technologies and laws into the program curriculum.

Typically, candidates have prior degrees in Computer Science or ample work experience in the field. Although programming is not used extensively, students are required to write programs in several courses. In order to succeed in the program, candidates must have skills in the following areas:

• Data Structures
• Discrete Math

Depending on their backgrounds, students may be required to take one or more of these preparatory courses. These courses are offered online as preparatory courses by the JMU InfoSec program.

Capella,  one of the select four-year colleges and graduate-level universities designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAEIAE) by the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security offers online Master’s program in Information Assurance and Security, which focuses on the specific issues that IT managers have identified as the greatest challenges faced by the industry today. Johns Hopkins University (JHU) offers full- and part-time opportunities, evening and weekend classes at campuses throughout the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area, in the fields of information security and information assurance. The university provides both degree and certificate programs.

The College of Computing in Georgia Tech, USA,  offers a Master of Science in Information Security in a distance learning format, a flexible degree option for working information security professionals who want more than industry certification. Each student is required to complete seven core courses and three additional courses in a self-selected technical or policy specialization. Core areas of study include Information Security, Applied Cryptography, Network Security, Secure Computer Systems, and Strategies and Policies. An applied research project must also be completed.

Penn State world campus also offers Information Security and Forensics option in the online intercollege Master of Professional Studies (iMPS) in Homeland Security. The program has modules on information security and assurance, cyber and network security, cyber threat defense and forensics, intelligence analysis, risk assessment, mitigations, and resiliencies, security policy development, privacy protection and assurance, security audit and compliance, emergency and security management across multiple venues.

Western Governor’s University in US offers an online M.S. in Information Security and Assurance will prepare you with the necessary skills for the protection of networks, communication, and data, as well as the knowledge base for planning, implementing, and managing enterprise level security and system integrity.

In addition to all these, Kaplan University online also offers MS in Information Security and Assurance.
